If the thoughts of the twinkly lights in the dark night and traditional mulled wine, with its sweet scents of cinnamon, cloves and citrus has you in the Christmas mood let's chat European Christmas markets!
Here's my top 3...
Budapest, Hungary
Brimming with trendy bars and thermal baths, Budapest is a fun place for a weekend getaway anytime. Add in an outdoor ice rink in Budapest City Park and the fact that every night during advent in Budapest, various festive stories and religious scenes are projected onto St. Stephen's Basilica through an amazing light show. Budapest is the perfect Christmas break.
Copenhagen, Denmark
The Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market in Copenhagen is one of the classics. This historic amusement park turns into a stunning Winter Wonderland during Christmas with over half a million twinkling lights 70,000 decorations and nearly 1,000 Christmas trees. The Nordic Christmas atmosphere is hard to beat.
Strasbourg, France
France’s “Capital of Christmas” looks like a real-life nativity scene at this time of year. The historical Christkindelsmärik at the base of the Opera House has been held there since 1570. My favourite is the Market of the Invincible Small Producers of Alsace for sausages and brioche-like kugelhopf. Yum.
